Ancient curling irons were used up to 6,000 years ago by the Babylonians, Persians, Greeks, and the Egyptians. Back in ancient times, they were rods of iron or bronze heated over a fire. Because you couldn’t control the temperature, the hair was damaged very easily. To learn how to curl your hair with a curling iron is easy now, but back then, it took a lot of trial and error. The electric curling iron, the one that we are more familiar with today, was invented in 1959 by Ron Lelievre and Roger Lemoine. These had more of temperature control and less likely to damage hair.

There is a specific sequence of events that need to happen in order to achieve perfect curls in your hair. First, you must heat up the curling iron. Turn on the curling iron button to ON and heat it to three hundred and twenty degrees for fine to medium thickness or hair, or four hundred and thirty degrees for thicker hair. The lowest temperature that does the job, is the best for you and your hair. The cooler the temperature, the less it will damage your hair.

Your second step is to brush out your hair thoroughly. Brushing your hair out before getting to the curling iron makes it easier to separate the parts in your hair. After you brush your hair so it is smooth and easy to manage, then it is time to spray heat protectant on your hair. Make sure your hair is dry before you spray it on. This heat protectant will be a barricade between your hair and the curling iron. The heat protectant not only prevents damage but adds shine.

Now that you have prepared your hair, the next step is parting your hair into sections and pinning them to your head. That way, the hair that is loose is the hair that has already been curled or is the part that is about to be curled. The next step is actually curling your hair. Wrap the part of your hair that you want to curl around the hot barrel of the curling iron, for three to four minutes. Be sure to alternate the different strands between clockwise and counter-clockwise, for a more natural effect. Once the strand of hair is curled, pin it to your head, compact it for a more natural and perfect curl. Continue until all of your hair is pinned and compacted.

After your hair has cooled off entirely, take out all of the pins, and release your hair. Shake out the curls for a more natural effect and fix any curls that didn’t turn out as you had wanted. You can even manipulate curls if desired. Last but not least, lightly spray your hair so the curls will hold. Don’t overdo, or else it will be crunchy. To be able to know how to curl your hair with a curling iron is a great way to have a different hair-do. Because now you know how to curl your hair with a curling iron.
