- How do you describe this look?
We are all in love with this vintage yet versatile shape. Pixie haircuts for curly hair like this are all about keeping the sides short and growing the top out. Her hair’s texture is a super fine coiled, but this one cut can be modified for any type of curl.
It’s great because you can wear the hair in front of the ears for a softer 70s vibe or slick it behind the ear for a more polished/dressy look.
- Any advice for someone considering it?
I recommend a cream to defrizz/define and a spray or gel to hold the curls in place, with any curly cut. Here, I styled her curls with motion. Then, lotion and sprayed it big on top with Session. Spray (both Kevin.Murphy products). Someone with strong features such as high-cheekbones, big eyes, or a strong jaw will rock this cut.

- How would you describe this look?
This short curly pixie cut is called the “big chop”, and to achieve this look, I used my own technique called the “curlspiration” cut.
When I get to connect on a deeper level with my curly girls, that’s my favorite part. Luckily, not all of her hair was damaged, so we did an edgier look and kept the top longer.
A lot of time when doing the big chop and if the hair is healthy enough, we do a bold color because it makes them want to celebrate letting go and embracing a part of them that they felt they couldn’t. This gorgeous girl wanted a bold red. I used Chi Iconic 6RR and 20 volume to get her base color and a high lift red on the ends to create a pop of brightness and some dimension.

You don’t need to have previously damaged hair to go this short for a curly look. I felt it creates such a dun overall look.
However, any curl pattern from 2a to 4c can rock a pixie. Just don’t forget to look for pictures of girls that have the same curls as you do, so that you can have an idea of how it will turn out. You can choose at least 3 different pixie haircuts, so your stylist can decide which one will best suit your face shape. For the round, square, and oval faces, keeping the hair a little longer and rounded on top works very well.
Like most of us curly girls, we use a lot of products in our hair, so getting a curly pixie will save so much time and money!
Most girls find they also narrow it down to one product whether you are a gel lover or a cream lover.
You always have to keep the curls hydrated, especially if you do color. I always recommend the DevaCurl conditioners, and I feel they do give the best hydration. I see my clients every 3-6 months with my pixie curlies. I see them every 6-8 weeks.
- Pixie Bob Perm for an Oval Face

- How would you describe this look?
This one is a pixie bob perm. Her hair is naturally very thick and straight but has some natural texture to it.
This is a short curly hair cut with a perm that is not as short as a pixie but also not quite a medium length. The color actually is her natural plus old highlights. It sometimes does lighten the hair a little bit therefore it looks lighter and blended after the perm.
- Any advice for someone considering it?
For the cut, I prefer to cut before perm and touch up or texturize after. When you have too much texturizing, it can be challenging when we are wrapping on the rod.
I love prepping my permed hair or naturally curly hair Pureology color fanatic – one of my favourite light hydrating leave-in conditioners that is also color-safe. Also, the client can use spritz on the second or third day to hydrate their curl.
L’Oréal professional (Hollywood curl range) Wave Fatal and Spiral Queen are the layering products I adore for thick curly hair. You can apply after towel dry when hair is still wet. I usually start with Wave Fatal. You have to apply generously, then on top, layer Spiral Queen Mousse on top. Finally, scrunch the hair to bring the curls and diffuse on air-dry.

- How would you describe this look?
This is a tapered pixie with a full, voluminous crown. I think Nicolle compares her cut to a Mohawk, but the shape tapers off to the top of the occipital bone.
My favorite thing about this haircut on Nicole is the way it highlights her eyes and her cheekbones.
A bonus is that her balayage is over 9 months old but there’s still some buts left through the tips.
- Any advice for someone considering it?
To me, anyone can rock short hair! It’s all about feeling confident in your stylist and their ability to work with your texture. In my opinion, the biggest thing to consider when going short is the upkeep.
Nicolle sees me every 8-10 weeks for a cut, and once in between to re-taper her sides and back. She’s actually investing more time and more than she did with a bob. Even with short hair, Nicole still has to use different to get the level of volume you see in the photo.

- How would you describe this look?
I love this curly pixie because it takes the sides incredibly short but blends the top in a way to keep the silhouette soft which is what my guest wanted. However, there was a challenge with how long to keep her curls on top, so it stayed tight enough to keep the shape but long enough to have the freedom to style with. I think my favorite part of this cut was the transformation it had on her! That being said, there is something very powerful about a big chop, and it was very apparent with this guest.
- Any advice for someone considering it?
Consider maintenance. You have to get your haircut far more often than when your hair is longer, so factor that into when your hair is longer, so factor that into your budget and time. If her hair was less curly on top, she would need to get reshaped much more often.
Shapes like this are fun because depending on the product and styling, it can transform into a very different shape pretty easily. Face shape plays into styling- for example, if you have a round face, styling to give yourself more height is helpful unless your goal is to accentuate that round shape.
We cleaned and conditioned with DevaCurl Original and used Deva curl’s B’Leave-in to start since her hair is dense but fine. And as a final step, we finished it with Light Defining Gel and dried it under a hood dryer on low.

- How do you describe this look?
This is a curly pixie haircut with playful caramel ribbons running throughout! She is in the process of growing out after shaving it off, and as we all know, grow out can be a bear.
Highlights that are too fine can tend to get lost on this type of natural curl. With her hair being that perfect curling ribbon texture, I pieced the highlights a little chunkier for that color pop. Which lets a lot of her natural color pop up, and that really sets off the caramel curls! Well, I tried to keep her hair close at the nape and I left a little hair around the ear. She can either let it hang loose or tuck it back.
- Any advice for someone considering it?
There are a couple of things to consider when thinking about this style. One is working with the natural curl and texture rather than fighting against it. This style is very good for someone on the go who likes low maintenance. Keep in mind, low maintenance doesn’t mean boring! She could just as easily hit the gym or a night on the town with this style.
Accessorizing short hair is so much fun! Bandanas, jeweled headbands, and don’t forget earrings – simple studs with a stunning hair clip or statement hoops can really set these curls off!
